Arenado Trade to Arizona Confirmed With Cardinals Eating $31M
St. Louis absorbed most of Arenado's remaining salary to facilitate a deal to Arizona after two offseasons of failed trade attempts.
The Cardinals traded Nolan Arenado to the Diamondbacks in January after St. Louis agreed to cover $31 million of the $42 million left on his contract. Arenado's no-trade clause had limited potential destinations for two offseasons, with only a short list of approved teams. His declining offensive production — including an 84 wRC+ in his final Cardinals season — made the trade difficult to execute. Arizona ultimately became one of his approved destinations, finalizing the deal.
